Maccaferri SA (Pty) Ltd is a subsidiary of Maccaferri Industrial Group (Gruppo Industriale Maccaferri), with headquarters in Bologna, Italy. The Maccaferri name is synonymous with gabions. The first records of the use of gabion systems go back more than 2,000 years, when Egyptians used cylindrical willow baskets full of small stones to protect the banks of the River Nile from erosion. In 1879, the Maccaferri’s in Zola Predosa (Bologna), a family involved in the manufacture and fabrication of iron works, undertook the first industrial production of the modern gabion. Since then, Maccaferri have expanded with manufacturing facilities and regional representation all around the world.
In South Africa, Maccaferri SA was initially first known as River and Sea Gabions, an agency that was formed back in 1957. In January 1989, the name changed to African Gabions (Pty) Ltd to coincide with the opening of the first factory in Isithebe in KwaZulu-Natal, which eventually relocated to Westmead in Pinetown.
In January 2007 the name was officially changed to Maccaferri SA (Pty) Ltd in line with our vision to provide our clients with a comprehensive range of solutions.
The company currently employs a staff of over 60 and focuses on fulfilling the ever-increasing demands from customers requiring the use of modern technology in order to protect the ecosystem.
