Geotechnical engineering is the study of the behaviour of soils under dynamic or static loading. When subjected to confinement or loading, the resultant forces within soils must be stabilised to ensure equilibrium of the surrounding environment. This can be accomplished by mass gravity structures or by incorporating reinforcement within the soil mass, commonly known as reinforced soils.
