Pavement engineering deals with the design of pavement systems or roads, combining layer types and thicknesses in the most cost effective manner to provide a safe, comfortable riding surface to the motorist. Distress and eventual failure of road pavements arise from the deeper base layers or from the upper wearing courses or seals. During the rehabilitation phase of these roads, modern designers are including reinforcement in pavement layers to mitigate and dampen the effects of rutting, crack reflection and asphalt fatigue. These solutions encompass polymeric grids or woven steel mesh as reinforcement to provide a cost benefit, high performance solution in the medium to long term.
